Opticians

by faffajane @ 15/07/06 - 14:19:35

A while ago I decided I needed an eye test, as it has been a year since my last one.  However I wasn't 100% happy with my optician and so on the recommendation of a friend I duly made an appointment at my local branch of Boots Opticians.

Mostly I wear glasses, but I have been known to wear contact lenses on a regular basis.  However over the last year or so I have had a few problems with my brand of contact lenses (daily disposables) and despite assurances from my optician that they are ok, the problem apparantly being caused by my very dry eyes.  She also told me to reduce wearing them to 1-2 times a week and for a max of 6 hours.  This has lead me to wearing my glasses more often as by the end of six hours my eyes have been really sore, I have had headaches and  the next morning my eyes have been streaming!

Don't get me wrong, vanity has nothing to do with this, I am quite happy wearing my glasses, but sometimes contact lenses can be more convenient especially for work.

So off I went to Boots and explained all this to the lovely optometrist who did a thorough eye test.

My perscription hasn't changed for my glasses which is good (I am very short sighted).  However it has been  suggested I change my brand of contact lenses to acuvue as these are more suitable to dry eyes.

I tried the pair she gave me for my first fitting and what a difference.

No itchy eyes.

The contact lenses are so comfortable I don't feel as though they are in, this is a first for me, last pair I used to feel them, though it never stopped me from poking myself in the eye when I forgot I wasn't wearing glasses and thought they needed to be pushed up a bit!

I have worn them since 10 this morning and am still going, comfort is wonderful and my eyes don't feel so dry. I have been told that I can wear them more frequently and for longer periods as well. Also, and this is the bit that I was annoyed at, it turns out that the lenses I had orginally were not correct for the shape of my eye (something to do with measurements) and were also the wrong prescription - hence the reason for the headaches!

Not impressed.

I wouldn't have minded if I had got them from a small unknown opticians, but this was one of the larger well known opticians who seem to be everywhere.  I must admit, Boots are a bit more expensive, but I am willing to pay that if it means I can go back to wearing contact lenses more regularly.

Hubby is now considering going in for an eye test and seeing if he will be able to wear contacts.  I like him in glasses, which he is wearing more and more, but he loses them quite frequently and he is thinking of wearing contacts for work.  This is the very screamish man who doesn't like pain - this could be interesting, how will he cope with putting fingers in eyes to take the lenses out?  hmmmmm watch this space lol!!!!
