Emotional day

by faffajane @ 20/07/06 - 19:17:29

A couple of months ago, a child in youngest son's school died of cancer. She was 8 years old.

All the children in the school knew her as it is a small school and she was in a wheelchair when she could make it into school. She had two sisters who also attend the school.

The school have been fantastic raising funds for the local hospice and supporting the family as well as counselling the children who needed help to deal with her death.

Today, the school arranged to let 300 pink balloons go up into the air in rememberance of her, backed completely by her parents who came along, as well as her two sisters. Pink was her favourite colour. There was also a collection for the hospice and every child went to school in something pink - or as in the boys case red. Two songs were sung, Lord of the dance and One more step around the world I go, and almost everyone who attended felt emotional.

Then the parents released their balloons and their two daughters, then the rest of the school and finally the parents of the children in the school that had turned up in support. Watching the balloons drift up into the cloudless sky was a very poignant moment. Everyone was affected by it. I am so glad we didn't have the thunderstorms we were promised and the day stayed nice for the whole school community to take part.

I went in my capacity as Parent Governor as I thought there should be a member of the governing body lending their support as well, though of course I was there as well as a parent. Just as well I did as I was the only member of the governing body that did turn up which I don't think is very supportive!

However It was a very poignant moment, one where you could give thanks that everything is ok with your own child, as well on reflecting how well the family are coping with the loss of a daughter and sibling.

I am glad this was done in remembrance of her, it really was special and the parents were really pleased that so many parents turned up in support.
