  • The tablecloth

One of many emails sent over the Christmas holidays, enjoy!

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned to their first ministry, to reopen a church in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October excited about their opportunities. When they saw their church, it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas Eve.

They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc, and on December 18 were ahead of schedule and just about finished.

On December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.

On the 21st, the pastor went over to the church. His heart sank when he saw that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about head high.

The pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do but postpone the Christmas Eve service, headed home. On the way he noticed that a local business was having a flea market type sale for charity so he stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross embroidered right in the center. It was just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall. He bought it and headed back to the church.

By this time it had started to snow. An older woman running from the opposite direction was trying to catch the bus.. She missed it. The pastor invited her to wait in the warm church for the next bus 45 minutes later.

She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.

Then he noticed the woman walking down the center aisle. Her face was like a sheet.. "Pastor," she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .

The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor told how he had just gotten the Tablecloth. The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. Her husband was going to follow her the next week. He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her husband or her home again.

The pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth; but she made the pastor keep it for the church. The pastor insisted on driving her home, that was the least he could do.. She lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day for a housecleaning job.

What a wonderful service they had on Christmas Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the spirit were great. At the end of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many said that they would return. One older man, whom the pastor recognized

from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he wasn't leaving.

The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on the front wall because it was identical to one that his wife had made years ago when they lived in Austria before the war and how could there be two tablecloths so much alike. He told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and put in a prison.. He never saw his wife or his home again all the 35 years in between.

The pastor asked him if he would allow him to take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten Island and to the same house where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier.

He helped the man climb the three flights of stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on the door and he saw the greatest Christmas reunion he could ever imagine.

  • How to make a difference

Browsing through the internet today and came across this gem.

    It is lovely.

  • A Poem for you

'Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the house,
Not a garment would fit me, not even a blouse.
The cookies I'd nibble, the eggnog I'd taste,
At those holiday parties went straight to my waist.

When I got on the scales there arose such a number!
I walked to the shop (less a walk than a lumber),
    And thought of the marvelous meals I'd prepared;
The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,

The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese,
And the way that I'd never said, "No thank you, please."
When I put on my extra-large husband's old shirt,
And prepared once again to do battle with dirt,

I said to myself, as only I can,
"You can't spend the winter disguised as a man!"
So away with the last of the sour cream dip!
Go, fruitcake! Go, cookies! Go, cracker and chips!

Each last bit of food that I like must be banished
'Till all the additional kilos have vanished.
I won't have that ice cream, not even a lick,
I'll chew only on a long celery stick.

I won't have choc biscuits, or white bread, or pie
I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.
I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore
But isn't that what January is for?

Unable to giggle, no longer a riot,
Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!

  • New Year Resolutions

Well as the new year approaches in a few days time, my thoughts turned to those important promises we make every year and never keep.

So thought I would post some New Years Resolutions for you that you CAN keep:

    10. Read less.

    9. I want to gain weight. Put on at least 30 pounds.

    8. Stop exercising. Waste of time.

    7. Watch more TV. I've been missing some good stuff.

    6. Procrastinate more.

    5. Drink. Drink some more.

    4. Start being superstitious.

    3. Spend more time at work.

    2. Stop bringing lunch from home: I should eat out more.

    and last but not least...

    1. Take up a new habit: maybe smoking!

Never say that I am not helpful :)

  • All That planning and it is gone in the wink of an eye!

    Christmas Day

Arrived. Nig and I had very little sleep the night before. He because he was excited (trust me he is worse than the kids) me, because the dogs kept walking up and down the stairs in the hope that someone may have left the living room door open so they can find their presents!

Alarm goes off at 6am. Didn't get to bed until 12 as had to make sure kids were asleep before we put Santa presents on the end of their bed. Lay in bed for a while then Nigel starts to unwrap his santa present.
"Are you going to open yours?" he queries so I struggle to sit up and open the one and only present santa saw fit to leave me beside my bed - a tub of maltesers great! Nigel opens all three of his and I give him his main present of the day ..................

A camrecorder - honestly your minds!!

And no he isn't allowed to film in the bedroom either!

Kids arrive in room with their santa gifts and the day starts.

After what seemed like an eternity opening presents that morning, I am now stuck in a kitchen, trying to get the meal done while everyone has fun. MIL arrives with FIL, dishes out her presents, complains about how spoilt I am with mine and so sets the tone of the day and much biting of the tongue! However it does go rather smoothly, dinner was delicious and there is much hilarity.

My presents, yes I was spoilt. I got perfume, a mulled wine kit, a necklace with matching earrings and bangle, perfume bottle (one with a pump on end of it), 1GB MP3 player, 2 cds (feeling and meatloaf), DVD-Tristan and Isolade, Armageddon and Bleak house, Pilates stretchband kit, fitness DVD, wine with wine rack, sevaral chocolates, more wine, latest Phillippa Grefory novel, a set of Cynthia Harrod Eagles novels, a dressing gown, and lots more that I cannot even think off right now.

A word about Christmas dinner - I excelled myself. Turkey, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, yorkshire pudding, pigs in blankets, apple and cranberry stuffing, sage and onion stuffing, mashed swede, sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, braised red cabbage with apple, and turkey gravy. Yummy!!!

Afternoon spent playing trivial pursuit and junior risk to much hilarity and laughter, comment from eldest child "this has to be the best Christmas yet!"

    Boxing Day

Total number of DVDs recived as presents this year by Nigel, kids and myself, 35. So today we spent watching some four of them, mainly the ones the kids wanted to watch, together. Boxing day is the traditional film watching day in our house. Lots of cold meat, pickle, cakes, and sweet and savory items are put onthe table to be consummed/picked at throughout the day and I rest with my feet up watching films with the family. We watched the wild, ice age 2, Narnia, and Christmas with the Kranks yesterday, all throughly enjoyable.

    Today

I feel huge, my waistline has expanded, upon going to the cupboard I see that there are even more goodies that are to be consummed that I really do not think my stomach will take anymore. I should go to the shops and see what the outside world is up to, but to be honest I think I will stay snuggled up with hubby and watch some more DVDs. The kids are quietly playing on their DS's and rather than restrict them think I will let them do that all day if they want, anything for peace and quiet! It will be a eat what you like day again today, and I will watch some more DVDs and perhaps do a little sewing as well.

I hope you all had a really good Christmas, I can safely say we did!

    Hugs xx
