Every year, the Eurovision is transmitted into our living rooms via that nice box that sits in the corner of the room. Every year we groan about how our entry never gets anywhere, about how political the voting was, about how dire this programme is. We laugh at Terry Wogan's comments. We laugh at the costumes, the terrible performances, the songs, scream at te political scoring, etc. The newspapers the next day, analyse every last detail. Headlines scream at us about the winners and losers yet every year, millions of us tune into the BBC and sit glued to the TV screens for the next 4 hours or so that it is on.
We are no exception.
Every year, we sit as a family with our own scoring system. Every year we watch and give marks to each performance, totalling up our scores at the end in the hope that we are somewhere near where the winning team will be. Each year we criticise our entry, which to be honest this year wasn't too bad but really, Andy Abrahmas put his heart and soul into the performance, but the song just wasn't right for the Eurovision I felt anyway.
But then again I thought the same about Russia's entry and look where that got, the winners. Someone please tell me though what was the point of having an ex Russian Ice skating champion on there though?
There were a few songs I really did like though I could see them more as stage performances really rather than Euro songs. I like watching the Eurovision to see the constumes, the effort some put into their performances, the different styles of music from various cultures. Our scoring was completely out this year, I think my husband and eldest son judged each country on the amount of flesh on display, how short the costume was and how good looking the girls were - most comments centred around all three of these in one form or another. Youngest, well all I can say is Eastern Europe if you ever want a fan here he is because most of the Balkan countries got hight scoring points from him, which is probably why Latvia came first on our score, Greece 7th and Russia 9th place. I based mine solely on the music, because in the end that is what matters, I like listening to backing music to see how that works with the actual song, how it pieces altogether, then on how well they perform, how much effort they put into it.
Despite the dodgy scoring, which will never change really and makes the Eurovision so much fun really, I can see us watching it for years to come, sad yes, but still so much fun!
